Free rider and collective action problem
situation in which the members of a group would benefit by working together to provide some outcome, but each individual is better off refusing to cooperate and reaping the benefits from those who do work (prisoner’s dilemma)
Public good
services or actions that once were provided to one person that become available to everyone
Representative democracy (consent of the governed)
legitimacy and moral right to use state power when consulted by the people (the people elect representatives)
Why do we have a government?
-promotes general welfare (help for the poor(aid) and disabled(care))
-Provides order (through military)
federalism

what did Madison believe about factions?
madison believed that government was needed to control the people. he believed that tyranny was prevented by encouraging a diverse array of groups and interests (pluralism)

why are states seen as “laboratories of democracy”
- federalism allows states to experiment w/ new laws and policies at the state level
- they are testing grounds for new ideas that can be later adopted at the federal level without causing massive disruption if they fall through.
