Exam 1 Flashcards
Chapters 19 and 20
microevolution
change in a single allele or gene frequency
Evolution
chane in one or more heritable characteristics of a population or species from one generation to the next
macroevolution
involves the formation of a new species (phenotypes)
population genetics
study of genes and genotypes in a population
species
a group of related organisms that share a distintive form
population
all members of a species that live in the same area and have the opportunity to interbreed
George Buffon
population of livig things change over time
Lamarck
inheritance of acquired traits due to changes in behavior to adapt to new environments
Darwin
catastrophism
sudden, violent events shaped earth (6000 yrs old)
uniformitarianism
slow geological processes shape Eart (much older that 6000 yrs)
natural selection
- more offspring than can survive
- competition for limited recourses
- individual with beneficial heritable traits are more likely to survive
convergent evolution
two species from different lineages have similar traits bc they occupy the same environment
homology
fundamental similarity that occurs due to descent from a common ancestor
homologous structures
Structures that are similar to each other because they are derived from the same ancestral structure.
gene pool
all of the alleles for every gene in a given population
polymorphism
presence of two or more variants or traits for a given character within a population
polymorphic gene
two or more alleles with a frequency of greater than one percent
