Professional Identity

Strategies to Build Professional Identity
seek to hear expectations clearly. value debriefing and feedback from role models, engage in reflection, understand your own responsibilites for learning and be accountable for them, build relationships with those around you, develop personal self care habits, embrace ay opportunity for experiences with patients
Integrity
doing what they say they will do and act with consistency and purpose; basis for trust; such as following through with pain meds, calling doc when pt asks you to, etc
Compassion
feeling what another is feeling and responding to it with the intent of doing something to help; taking time to talk with a family member, responding to pt call light with interest, etc
Courage
speaking up when a colleague did not wash their hands; speaking out against bullying on the floor; taking practice issues to the practice council to positively change practice on your nursing unit
Humility
they view the world with equanimity, taking neither an overstated amount of credit nor blame for a situation; being nonjudgemental when staff deals with a unit crisis, idenitfying your part in an error, seeing the larger picture
Advocacy
listening carefully to patients wishes and working with the hospital to do what you can to make that happen; asking patients permission to communicate info to family
Human Flourishing
encouraging patients and colleagues in their difficult times; seeking additional resources for pt with limited discharge plans; creating a positive environment

Incivility
the presence of words and/or behaviors to demonstrate defiance, disrespect, lack of regard or aggression; rude, disruptive behaviors which often result in psychological or physiological distress for the people involved
What can cause incivility?
multi-factoral, fear, cultural differences, generational differences, no consistent model of civil behavior, mistrust, it can have no cause
HIPPA
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996; provides indivudals with preexisting medical conditions access to health insurance; provide individuals who change or lose their jobs access to health insurance; prevents healthcare fraud and abuse; promotes liability reform; provides patinet privacy (privacy rule)
HIPAA Purpose
allows patients more control over their health information; sets limits on the use and release of health information; establishes safeguards that healthcare providers and others must follow to protect pateints information; allows patients the right to examine and obtain a copy of their health records and requests corrections; civil and criminal penalities for violations of the law
HIPAA Breaches
sharing your password; not logging out of your computer; snooping; taking pt info home; leaving pt information in an easily accessible space; properly monitor and dispose of patient informatin; sharing patient information with others that are not directly involved in caring for the patient; phots and social media; email
EMTALA
Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act; ensures public access to emergency services regardless of ability to pay; required to provide a medical screening exam; must treat emergency conditions to the ability of the facility; provides emergency care to everyone regardless of ability to pay; required to transfer if the facility can not treat the condition; handles appropriate transfer and docomentation
