Exam 1 Flashcards
Matter: macroscopic & molecular definition
Macroscopic: anything has mass & space (see, touch, ie.water)
Molecular: anything composed of molecules (ions, atoms, subatomic particles)
Most fundamental building blocks of matter:
subatomic particles (electrons, neutrons, protons)
Cannot separate into any smaller parts
3 states of matter
Solid: fixed position, vibrate, can’t leave position in crystalline lattice
Liquid: glued together, can slide past each other, vibrate & rotate
Gas: free to move, occupy entire volume container
Allotropes:
different forms of same element (ie. oxygen gas)
Regular oxygen gas (O2), heated, becomes ozone gas (O3)
Compounds:
combining different atoms (elements)
water [H2O]
Element:
molecules contain only 1 type of atom
(cannot be decomposed) [O2]
Pure substance:
same molecule - hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)
Mixture:
different molecules
Homogenous mixture:
uniform, mixed very thoroughly - solutions & air
Homogeneous mixtures, solution (variable composition)
Heterogeneous mixture:
distinct clumps different molecules/substance
oil & water
