27
Q

roblems of textual criticism: Ending of Mark,

A

The shorter ending tells that the women briefly told the story to those around Peter. Jesus is noted to then have been “ sent out through them”. This ending is problematic due to the issue of a poor manuscript. As discussed during lecture, the author of this ending is not the same as the Gospel of Mark. This is evidenced by the language and the employment of a theological construct that would come much later. This is most likely the result of a later scribe attempting to amend the ending to Mark.

The longer ending is also problematic as it ties in with later references found within the Gospel of Luke. As discussed during the lecture, this ending is most likely coming from the later Middle Ages due to the attempts at harmonization with the Gospel of Luke. In addition, the language does not match Mark. Again, this may mostly likely be the result of a later scribe attempting to amend Mark and harmonize it with Luke.

28
Q

Woman caught in adultery in John

A

There are several textual problems present. The passage is enclosed in double brackets indicating that textual authorities are skeptical that it is original to John. Furthermore, the footnotes indicate that it may belong either after John 21:25 or after Luke 21:28. Its placement at the end of Chapter 7 and before 8:12 interrupts the flow of the story.

29
Q

Development of canon—why these books and how these books?

A
30
Q

Temptation Scene

A

Sets up the opposition of the spirit of God vs. the demonic forces ( led by Satan)
Mark 1:12-13
In literature in early Judaism- there is a ton of literature filled with the demonic powers that oppose God- prominent theme in the time period
Qumran
For the gospel of Mark- the issue of these powers coming into conflict is very important
Why there are so many encounters between Jesus and demonic powers in this Gospel
Little doubt that the GoMark ties this demonic power to Rome
Name of the demon- Legion- Roman military unit
Jesus comes out and immediately annouces the arrival of the kingdom of God

31
Q

The ARRIVAL OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD:

A

Refers to God’s end of time rule
Jesus is going to take the title of Son of Man
Thematically it does fit with the kingdom of God
Daniel 7- 167/164 BCE
The Son of Man appears
Clearly an angelic being
Most likely Michael
Comes as part of a judgment scene- at the end of the scene the Kingdom of God is established
Judgment is taking place against all these demonic powers- taken the forms of beast and fueling empires that oppress God’s people.
Empires are all destroyed- the kingdom of the most high is set up
These themes are fueling the world view/ understanding of the author of the GoMark
Verse 14“ The kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.”
