Exam 1 Flashcards
What are the 4 basic cell types.
- Epithelial
- Connective
- Nervous
- Muscle tissues
What are the main leavels of biological organization (from smallest to largest)
Chemical
Cellular
tissue
organ
organ systems
What is Homeostasis
“maintenance of nearly constant conditions in the internal environment.”
What is the Internal Environment?
It can be thought of as extracellular fluid surrounding the cells of the body.
What is extra cellular fluid (ECF)?
- It contains ions/nutrients needed by cells to function (i.e. to maintain life)
- The cells of the body exist in essentally the same extra cellular fluid.
This extra cellular fluid is in equilibrium through the body.
Ion mammals is the micro environment for cells/tissues/organs consistent (T/F)
true
What are the 4 electrolyte ions we need to know
- Sodium ion
- Potassium ion
- Calcium ion
- Chloride ion
What does the cell membrane act as?
A selective barrier
What are the 2 forms of ER
smooth and rough
What function is the rough ER primarily involved in
protien synthesis
The smooth ER contains the enzymes for what.
lipid synthesis
What are the classes of proteins that the rough ER make
- Those destined to be secreated
- Those destined to be inserted in a membrane
- Those destined to be delivered to another membrane organelle
What are the three components of the Golgi network
- The cis Golgi network (entry)
- the Golgi stack (the main body)
- trans Golgi network (exit)
What is glycosylation
Enzymes
What is sulfation
the addition of sulfate
