Exam 1 Flashcards
What does GHS and WHMIS stand for?
GHS- Globally Harmonized
WHMIS- Workplace hazardous materials information system
What is GHS purpose?
GHS defines and classifies the hazards of chemical products. (Also communicates health and safety information on labels and sds)
What does SDS stand for?
Safety data sheets
What does SDS mean?
Sds are summary documents that provide information about the hazards of a product and advice about safety precautions
Define physical change
. Ex: freezing a liquid is a physical change
Define chemical change
Atoms of one or more substances and change in their chemical properties or composition, resulting in the formation of it at least one new substance.
Ex. The formation of rust on iron is a chemical change.
List and define the 5 phase (physical) change.
Freezing
Melting
Vaporization
Condensation
Sublimation
List the 4 indicators of a chemical change
Color change
Production of an odar
Change of temperature
Formation of bubbles
List the 11 physical properties.
Colour and lustre
Melting point
Boiling point
Density
Solubility
Ductility
Crystal shape
Conductivity
Hardness

Malleability
What is solution
A solution is a homogenous mixture of one or more solutes dissolved in a solvent
What solvent
The substance that dissolves a solute to form a solution is called the solvent
What is solute
The solute is the substance that dissolves in the solvent
What is pure substance
Substances that are made up of only one kind of particle and have a fixed or constant structure
What is matter
Matter is anything that takes up space and can be weighed.
List four states of matter
Solid
Liquid
Gas
Plasma
