Exam 1 Flashcards
What is animal physiology?
The study of how animals work that asks how the organism functions and why does it benefit the animal.
What is integration?
Each molecule, cell, system, and organism has an effect on others in its group that communicates via feedback loops.
What are the three steps of integration/feedback loops?
Signal sent, the signal received, and response to a signal.
What is ohm’s law?
V (charge/gradient difference) = I (flow of ions) x R (resistance)
What are adaptations?
Changes that occur within a population of organisms that is based on natural selection and fitness of a group.
What is genetic drift?
Changes that occur in small populations/individually that is based on random events and not natural selection.
What is phenotypic plasticity?
Different phenotypes of individuals rely on both genotypes and the environment that the individual is in. An example is daphnias.
What are conformers?
Organisms whose systems/body follows the environment.
What are regulators?
Organisms that maintain an internal environment within a set range.
What is an example of a negative feedback loop?
Stimulation: decreased oxygen stimulation that triggers breathing rate and depth to increase.
What is an example of a positive feedback loop?
Childbirth
What is pH?
The measurement of free H+ in a solution
Rank the strength of different bond types (strongest to weakest).
Hydrogen bonding, ionic bonds, polar covalent bonds, nonpolar covalent bonds.
What are buffers?
Molecules that absorb or release protons. Usually weak acids that work over a certain range.
What is activation energy?
The energy required to start a chemical reaction
