EXAM 1 Flashcards
What is conservation
- the protection and preservation an ecosystem or organism
- limiting human caused damage
- restore damage; human caused and other
What is management
Manipulation of people, populations, or habitat to meet specified goals and objectives
Manipulation implies we will use energy or materials to alter the trajectory in a systems from what would naturally occur
how many species are exploited in the oceans
~9,000 species
Deterioration of marine ecosystems result in:
increase of coastal flooding, erosion of wetlands, reduced water quality, increased beach closures due to red tide etc.
3 properties of water
solid, liquid, gas
H2O
two hydrogen one oxygen
Hydrogen atom in water
1 proton, positive charge, found in nucleus
1 electron, negative charge, orbits around nucleus in electron cloud
oxygen atom in water
8 protons, 8 neutrons, 8 electrons
3 unique characteristics of water
- dissolves more substances in greater quantities than other liquids
- highest heat capacity of all common solids and liquids
- has all states of matter
when is water densest?
at 4 degrees celcius, that’s why coldest water is at the bottom
What affects the density of water?
Temperature and salinity
when does seawater begin to freeze?
seawater freezes at -2 degrees
how does salt exist chemically in the ocean
NaCl, the sodium is positively charged, chlorine is negatively charged, water is polar so it attaches to the positive sodium and the negatively charged oxygen pulls them apart.
how is salt removed from the ocean
salt spray on land, evaporation from shallow arms of the ocean, taken up from organisms, solutions bind together and settle: precipitates
cold air properties
cold air is more dense and sinks
