Exam 1 Flashcards
What is the educational philosophy?
Fun, fitness and acquiring good fundamentals
What are the 3 fun principles?
Participants must be active most of the time, participants must be successful most of the time, participants must play most of the time
What are the 8 play guidelines?
- Games should have a purpose
- Safe running in a gymnastics gym
- Participants should always be active in the game
- Games must be age and maturity appropriate
- Tag games can be your best friend
- Play cooperative AND competitive games
- Change a game is dangerous or not working properly
- Stop the game while participants still want to play it
What does ESP-F stand for?
Endurance, speed, power and flexibility
Define muscular endurance
Ability of muscle fibres to resist fatigue by increasing energy stored in cells.
Define cardiorespiratory endurance?
Ability of the heart, vessels and lungs to deliver blood and oxygen to the muscles
Define strength?
Maximum force a muscle generates in a single contraction
What are the 3 mechanical states of muscle contraction?
Isometric, concentric and eccentric
What is the definition of power?
A combination of strength and speed, measuring how fast we can generate a maximum force
Define flexibility?
If muscles and tendons are stretched, those tissues will adapt by increasing their resting length
What is a passive ROM?
ROM is achieved by using external forces
What is active ROM?
Uses the internal force of muscle contraction using strength and stretching
What is the definition of agility?
Capacity to move the body quickly and efficiently from positions
What is the definition of balance?
Ability to hold a stationary positions and to move while in a balanced state
What is the definition of coordination?
Whole body moving in complex patterns or manipulating projectiles
What is the definition of spatial orientation?
Balance and sensitivity to the body being inverted and spinning free in space
What is fundamental movement pattern #1? What are 3 examples?
Gymnast is stationary. Support, hanging and balances
What is fundamental movement pattern #2? What are the 2 types?
Gymnast is non-stationary. Base of support is moving. Linear and rotational
What Is fundamental movement pattern #3?
From motion to stationary. Center of movement is moving to a base of support
What are the 5 sections of gymnastics? What does ‘landings’ fall under?
Stationary, spring, locomotion, rotation, and swing. Locomotion
What is fundamental movement pattern #4?
Gymnast and hand apparatus
What is definition 1 of centre of mass?
The balance point of a body = its centre of mass
What is definition 2 of centre of mass?
The point about which all the body’s mass is equally distributed in all direction
What is definition 3 of centre of mass?
The point about which a body rotates when its free in space
What is definition 4 of centre of mass?
The intersection of the 3 primary axes
What is essential to remember about one’s centre of mass?
The centre of mass of a body is not a fixed point
What is the definition of supports?
If your centre of mass is near the middle of your base of support
What is the definition of balances?
If your centre of mass is near the edge of your base of support.
What is the definition of ‘hangs’?
Positions of mass in which the centre of mass is directly below the base
What are the 5 types of supports?
Front, rear, side, cross and bridges
What are the 4 steps in teaching hand balances?
- Develop arm strength and spatial awareness
- Develop ‘safe exit’ skills before attempting hand stand
- Perform safe exit drills
- Practice safe entrance with a partner
What are the 3 ways we can perform landings?
Forward, backward and sideways
