Things that can increase risk for infection are…..
age, steroids, chemotherapy, prolonged stress, compromised skin or mucous membranes, increase in #/ type of organism, instrumentation, poor nutrition, existing disease.
A systemic infection includes these symptoms……
Bacteremia, leukocytosis, arthralgias, myalgias malaise confusion, septicemia, septic shock.
A local infection includes these symptoms……
Heat, edema, exudate, redness, pain.
A big sign that a senior might have an infection is….
confusion
What do nurses do to help clients who have infections?
Moniter and report anything new or persistent -fever or very low temp. (<96) -labwork results -any new symptoms, esp. confusion. Give meds Provide basic care(food, drink, toileting, hygiene, exercise, emotional support).
5 precautions and isolations are……
Standard, contact, droplet, airborne, reverse isolation.
