After hundreds of workers were laid off and wages were reduced at a Pullman Factory in Illinois, rent stayed the same . After asking for rent to be reduced was rejected they went on strike.
Eugene Debs called fo a nationwide boycott of pullman cars.

Frances Willard
Movement of women using their Christian morals to influence there entrance in politics.
The group was founded to get rid of alcohol and ended up leading to the prohibition.

Wrote about child labor, unsafe working conditions, poor housing, and corporate monopolies.
One of the most known pieces being Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle about the awful conditions of the meat packing industry. This led to the pure food and drug act of 1911.

First time entrance into the U.S. was denied due to race or ethnicity.
Battle of Little Big Horn
In 1876 Custer and his group ran into a group of 2,000.
Custer was killed along with 200 of his men.
Right before the 100 year anniversary of Independence Day.
The incident was used to make Indians look like savage killers.
February of 1877 the Sioux were defeated.
Knights of Labor
The largest labor organization of the 19th century.
Peaking with around 800,000 members .
Acceptance for all except Chinese.
Called for 8 hour work day, nationalization of the railroad, end of child labor, and a more equal distribution of wealth.
Wounded Knee

Near Wounded Knee
U.S. soldiers attacked the ghost dance and killed between 150 and 200 women, men, and children.
This massacre brought an end to years of conflict between European settlers and Native Americans.
Booker T. Washington
Born In Virginia 1856 as a slave
1881 founded the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.
His idea was for African Americans to improve themselves economically and learn skills.
Dawes Act
Passed 1887
Broke up nearly all of the land that had been granted to native tribes.
Broke all of the treaties that had been granted to native americans into small parcels of land to be given out to indian families if they agreed to adopt the property and become American citizens.
W.E.B. DuBois
Born 1868
DuBois was Washington’s biggest critique and argued for agitation and insisted they demand equality.
Called for the right to vote civic equality and the education of youth according to their ability.
Platt Amendment
1903
Authorized the United States government to intervene in Cuban military whenever it saw fit.
Forced Cuba to have it in their constitution.
The United States also received the permanent lease of a naval base in Guantanamo Bay.
