ex 2: CARE & USE OF MICROSCOPE Flashcards
brightfield light microscopy
binocular compound microscopes, meaning they have 2 eyepieces and more than one lens
ocular lenses
(eye pieces) that magnify the specimen 10x
objective lenses
magnify 4X, 10X, 40X, 100X
condenser lens
does not magnify but instead focuses the light
objective lens are located on
rotating nosepiece
rotating nosepiece
allows user to switch each easily from one magnifying lens to another
4X objective is known as
the scanning lens
10X objective is known as
the low power lens
40X objective is known as
high-dry lens
100X objective is known as
oil immersion lens
path of light is from the
illuminator (light source)
up through the condenser lens
throught the specimen on the slide
up through the objective lens
to the ocular lens
finally to the person viewing the microscope
light intensity knob (dimmer)
control the amount of light from the illuminator
iris diaphragm
can be opened and closed to control the amount of light that passes from the illuminator through the condenser lens
stage
the flat surface upon which a slide is placed
course focus knob
moves the stage vertically, toward, and away from the objective lens
should only be used for lower power objectives (4X and 10X)
