Evolving Atmosphere Flashcards
What do we mean by carbon ‘locked into’ rock
Over a long time carbon has been taken in by animals who have died and been fossilised in to a huge build up at the bottom of the vast ocean. Under the pressure it forms sedimentary rocks.
How do animals eat carbon?
The plants intake the carbon meaning when herbivores eat it they are intaking carbon and them carnivorous animals eat them meaning they are intaking carbon.
What rock is coal classed as?
Sedimentary rock.
How were crude oil and natural gas formed?
They were formed from the remains of plankton deposited in muds on the sea-bed. These were compressed by sedimentary rocks and formed underneath the layers of rock.
Where is lots of carbon stored.
Within the earth’s crust.
Why in the last 200years has the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere not changed?
This is due to the natural cycle of carbon moving between the oceans, rocks, and atmosphere.
Has the proportions of gas stabilised since 200yrs ago?
Yes.
Percentages of gas in the atmosphere.
Nitrogen=78% Oxygen=21% Argon=0.9% Carbon Dioxide=0.04% Not able to trace any others.
What percentage of noble gas is there in the air?
1%
- 9%-argon
- 1%-everything else
