Evolutionary relationships Flashcards
Phylogeny
The study of the evolutionary history of organisms - tells whos related + how closely related - this is shown on a phylogenetic tree - all organisms have evolved from shared common ancestors.
Taxonomy
science of classification - names organisms + organising them into groups (grouping together related organisms) - takes into account phylogency + group organisms according to their evolutionary relationships.
Taxa
the groups organisms are classified in - each group called a taxon.
Groups are arranged in hierarchy..
Largest groups at the top and smallest at the bottom - organisms can belong to only one group at each level in the hierarchy (no overlap)
Organisms first sorted into..
3 large groups - the domains - eukarya, Bacteria, Archaea - then related organisms in a domain then sorted into smaller groups called kingdoms.
