Evolution Vocabulary Flashcards
What makes a new species?
A new species is formed when a population can no longer successfully reproduce with the original population.
What is natural section?
Animals with successful traits are more likely to live to adulthood and have more babies. “Survival of the fittest”
What is the struggle for existence?
Members compete for food, shelter, life necessities.
What is “survival of the fittest”?
Some individuals better suited for the environment are more likely to survive
What is variation?
Differences among the members of a species (raw material of evolution).
What is an adaptation?
A trait that gives an organism an advantage to survive in its environment and reproduce.
What is fitness?
The ability to survive and produce offspring who can survive and reproduce.
What is evolution?
A Change in a species over time. And Individual can’t evolve, only a population. It is a well supported and tested theory.
What is a mutation?
The reproduction of genetic material does not always happen perfectly. Mutations can be good and bad for the organism. Natural selection might favor a mutation that is not favorable in the original environment.
