evolution test 2023 Flashcards
What was Lamarck theory
that traits could evolve in an organisms lifetime and be passed to offspring
what was Darwin’s theory
to provide evidence that organisms that are best adapted to survive are more likely to reproduce and pass traits
what are the 4 steps for natural selection?
- variation
- selection pressure
- best adapted/ and pass on offspring
- reproduce favorable traits increase in the population
What is Artificial selection?
humans decide which organisms produce e.g dog breeds, cattle that produce lots of milk/met/fruit/veg
what is the downside to artificial selection?
loss of genetic diversity
what is speciation?
is the creation of a new species
what are species?
members of a species can breed to create fertile offspring
what are fossils?
remains of living things
what is direct fossils?
(body)- hard parts of organsim
what is indirect fossils?
traces of living things, eg footprints, cave drawings
what are the 4 best conditions for fossilisation?
- quick burial by sediments
- the pressure of hard body or shell
- temp conditions
- calm conditions
what is a replacement fossil?
when bone is replaced by bone
what is carbon film fossil?
leaves behind carbon deposit
what are 4 things to preserving environment
- permafrost
- amber and tar
- peast
- dry air
where are fossils found?
in sedimentary rocks, formed by sediments accumulating in layers
