Evolution Exam Flashcards
What is Natural Selection?
That organisms that are better adapted are more likely to survive and have offspring
What is evolution?
When a population gradually changes over a long period of time
What is variation?
Individual difference between the same species
High variation= High survival
What is overproduction?
When organisms lay many eggs to get multiple survivors for genetic variation
What is selection?
If genes are successful, they can pass down their genes
What are the four main categories for evolution?
Fossil evidence, Common/ Vestigial structures, DNA evidence, and Embryology
What is fossil evidence?
This is transitional forms
What is Common/ Vestigial structures?
Common structures are made from the same starting materials, but modified for species survival. Vestigial structures are left over things from an earlier evolutionary stage
What is DNA evidence?
The molecules in our body are made from DNA. The number of similar DNA molecules indicates relatedness. Though the arrangement is quite different, the actual percentage of genes shared by organisms
What is Embryology?
Vertebrate animals develop from a common form
