Evolution Flashcards
What is evolution?
The process by which living organism change over time- and become better adapted to new conditions
What is a theory?
A scientific statement that is supported by observations and experiments
What does the theory of evolution propose?
Species change through the processes of:
- Natural Selection
- Mutation
- Adaptation
- Extinction
What is natural selection?
Individuals that are better adapted to their environment are more likely to survive
What are mutations?
Inherited changes that occur by changing the genetic code (DNA) of an organism
What is extinction?
Occurs when all the members of a species die off
What are adaptations?
Inherited traits that let organisms survive and produce young (reproduction)
What are factors that affect survival?
- Overproduction
- Competition
- Genetic Variations
- Adaptations
What is overproduction?
More offspring is made than needed for species to survive
What is competition?
Only the best survive
What are genetic variations?
The differences in inherited traits of individuals in a population
What is artificial selection?
Breeding for certain traits
What is a species?
A group of similar organisms that can mate and produce offspring
