Evolution Flashcards
Sexual reproduction
the production of new living organisms by combining genetic information from two individuals of different types (sexes). In most higher organisms, one sex (male) produces a small motile gamete which travels to fuse with a larger stationary gamete produced by the other (female).
Asexual reproduction
is a type of reproduction by which offspring arise from a single organism, and inherit the genes of that parent only; it does not involve the fusion of gametes, and almost never changes the number of chromosomes.
Species
a group of living organisms consisting of similar individuals capable of exchanging genes or interbreeding. The species is the principal natural taxonomic unit, ranking below a genus and denoted by a Latin binomial, e.g. Homo sapiens.
Adaption
the action or process of adapting or being adapted.
Evolution
the process by which different kinds of living organisms are thought to have developed and diversified from earlier forms during the history of the earth.
Scientific Theory
is an explanation of an aspect of the natural world that can be repeatedly tested and verified in accordance with the scientific method, using accepted protocols of observation, measurement, and evaluation of results.
Natural selection
the process whereby organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring.
Variation
a change or difference in condition, amount, or level, typically with certain limits.
Behavioral adaptation
Behavioral adaptations are the things organisms do to survive.
Structural adaptations
are physical features of an organism like the bill on a bird or the fur on a bear.
Physiological adaption
are internal systematic responses to external stimuli in order to help an organism maintain homeostasis.
Hibernation
the condition or period of an animal or plant spending the winter in a dormant state.
Migration
seasonal movement of animals from one region to another.
Selective breeding
involves choosing parents with particular characteristics to breed together and produce offspring with more desirable characteristics.
Environmental pressures
reflect the impact of human activities on the environment
