Evolution Flashcards
How do you decide if 2 individuals are the same species?
Using species concepts (e.g Individuals that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring are considered the same species)
What is adaptation?
An inherited trait in which enhances an organism’s ability to survive and reproduce in a particular environment.
What is variation?
A difference in physical traits among individuals in a population, usually caused by genetic differences.
What is “natural selection”?
A process where organisms better adapted to their environment are able to produce fertile offspring and survive.
What is “artificial selection”?
A process in where humans selectively breed organisms for desired traits.
What is “sexual selection”?
an aspect in where traits are favoured since they enhance an individual’s chances of mating.
Define “common ancestors”.
A species from which 2 or more species have evolved.
What are cladograms?
A diagram that shows evolutionary relationships among species based on shared characteristics.
What are some examples of evidence for evolution?
Fossil records, comparative anatomy, genetic evidence, biogeography.
