Evolution Flashcards
What is Science?
It is the knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe.
What is Evolution?
Is the Change in the genetic compostion of population overtime.
What is Microevolution
It is a slight change within a species, but stays as the same species
What is Macroevolution?
It is a change within a species that results in the formation of new species
What is Evolutionary theory?
It is understanding and applying the processes of evolutionary change
to biological problems
What does Evolutionary theory help us understand?
- This helps us predict changes within the biological world
- study treatment and disease
- Development of crops and industrial processes
- Understanding diversification of life
What is the Scientific Theory?
It is a hypothesis based on a large body of knowledge
Who is Karl Popper?
defined falsification and believed observations can falsify theories
What should I know about science?
it is supported by other sources, is testable, is not set
in stone (it is always changing), and can never prove a theory true
What can Science do?
Science can change over time theories can be disproven as more information is
collected
How do we know that humans are responsible for the increase in CO2 in the atmosphere?
Since fossil fuels take a long time to form, all C14 has already decayed because of its short half life, so fossil fuels
are left with a high C12 content
What is the Suess Effect?
This is when the carbon we are releasing (C12)
from fossil fuels is going up while the natural
carbon (C14) is going down
Who is Charles Darwin?
- a naturalist who came up with a
mechanism (natural selection) to explain evolution while going to the
Galapagos islands
What is Divergent species
separate species that share a common ancestor
Who is Charles Lyell
founded uniformitarianism
(same slow forces that shaped the Earth are still operating
today)
