Evil & Suffering Flashcards
Moral evil
Evil due to the misuse of human free will
Natural evil
Evil caused by the nature of the world. Not human responsibility
Logical problem of evil (a priori)
Gods OMNISCIENCE (all knowingness) Gods OMNIPOTENCE (all powerfulness) Gods OMNIBENEVOLENCE (all lovingness) - this suggests god has full knowledge of evil and suffering and all the power to stop it yet it’s still here, meaning does he truly love us?
Inconsistent Triad (logical problem of evil)
- JL Mackie
- all three can’t be true if they all exist at the same time - they contradict.
- god is all loving , powerful and evil exists.
Evidential problem of evil
-JS Mill
Evil and suffering is enough evidence to believe there is no higher power eg god.
-if god allows this he’s not a good guide to follow
Augustine argument
Humans are to blame for all evil and suffering due to the fall
Original perfection
God created everything good just in different ways. A dog is good if it fetches. Pen is good if it writes and humans are good if they commit good acts
Privation
Evil and suffering doesn’t exist it’s just a lack of goodness
Hick
Takes irenaeus’ idea that we are made in the image of god but must work to develop the likeness of god through making good decisions morally.
-god made us imperfect so that we can grow and develop.
