Evidence Based Medicine Flashcards
What is the purpose of having “Levels of Evidence”
Levels of Evidence (LOE)
1) Ascribe a level of risk of bias in a study design
2) Assist in grading quality of recommendations for guidelines
What kind of study is has level 1 LOE?
Systematic reviews and meta-analyses
Observational studies
Non-experimental studies that compare 2 or more populations to address a hypothesis about a disease
Types of observational studies
In order of increasing strength
- cross-sectional
- case control
- cohort studies
Cohort studies
Enrol subjects with EXPOSURE to a risk factor, matched with ‘unexposed’ controls, then follows subjects over time to see if new cases of disease (OUTCOME) develop.
Case control studies
Enrol subjects with DISEASE then find out if they have been exposed to RISK FACTORS. Usually retrospective.
Can study multiple risk factors.
Cross-sectional studies
Assess EXPOSURE and OUTCOME at the same time.
E.g. in population surveys.
