Homologous Structures – body parts that are similar in structure but have a different function
Homologous structures are similar because they were inherited from a common ancestor Ex: bone structure, hair
Analogous Structures - structures that share a common function but different internal anatomy
Analogous structures means they do not share a common ancestor but they may have just lived in similar ecological niches Ex: wings of butterflies and birds, eyes of lobster and fish

- Scientists can determine how closely related 2 species are by examining DNA
- Similar DNA patterns indicate the sequences came from a common ancestor
- Human and chimp DNA are more the 96% similar this means this means we are genetically related
to chimps and share a common ancestor
