Everything I need to know for the test Flashcards
Can you label the 4 forces acting on a plane?
Thrust, drag, gravity, lift.
When would the forces on a plane be unbalanced? Explain
When the plane is taking off (accelerating) and when the plane is landing (decelerating).
Do you know the difference between contact and non-contact forces? Which forces are contact/non-contact?
Contact forces are when objects are touching eg. Friction, a non-contact force is a force where things are not touching eg. Gravity and magnetism.
Write what you know about friction.
Friction is a non-contact force, it produces heat and slows things down.
List useful friction
- Walking
- Gripping objects
- Braking
- Striking a match
List ways to reduce unwanted friction
- Reducing the contact area by putting wheels under the object
- Put a thin layer of fluid
- Make the surfaces smooth
What is inertia?
Inertia is an objects resistance to changing its motion.
What is the difference between a spring tide and a neap tide?
A spring tide is a larger tide caused by the moon and the sun pulling on the earth from the same side and a neap tide is a smaller tide caused by the moon and the sun pulling at the earth in right angles.
Summarise what you know about magnets.
The magnetic force is a non-contact force. A magnet produces a force that pulls or attracts objects/materials made of metals, iron, cobalt or nickel towards it.
Levers: can you identify the positions of the fulcrum, load and effort in the 3 different first class levers.
- Lfe
- Elf
- lef
Define the terms fulcrum, load and effort.
Fulcrum is the pivot point or turning point of an object.
Load is what is being lifted
Effort is the force applied to a lever to get the job done.
How do you calculate Mechanical advantage?
MA= Load divided effort
What is a force?
A force is a push, pull or twist.
What does a force cause?
A force causes a change in movement, direction and change in shape/ size.
What are balanced forces?
Equal forces acting in the opposite direction
