This missionary is known as the “Father of the Lower Rio Grande Valley” because of his establishing over 20 towns and multiple missions. He made peace with the Indians and presented colonization plans along the Rio Grande.
San Saba Mission
The mission that over 2,000 Indians rebelled against the Spanish settlement and the establishment of the mission system by burning it down.
The Lipan Apache had gone to war with these Natives so the Natives fought back the Spanish who fed and sheltered the Lipan. The Natives burned the mission so it was hitting two birds with one stone.

Francisco Hidalgo, a Spanish priest of the Franciscan order of Roman Catholicism, was a missionary to the American Indians in what are now northern Mexico and East Texas. His efforts helped lead to the long Spanish occupation of Texas.

Many Mexicans became unhappy with Spanish rule because: Taxes were raised in Mexico and Texas to pay for things in Spain. Only people from Spain could get good jobs.

August 1813 the Republican Army fought in the Battle of Medina near San Antonio; Spain defeated the Republican Army killing most troops, those that surrendered were executed, but a few escaped by fleeing to the US. Anyone Spain suspected of helping the Republican Army was executed or forced to leave Texas. Many people fled from the towns of Goliad and Nacogdoches
