Where did the Indian mutiny / rebellion begin ?
It began with sepoys in Meerut ( outside Delhi ) rose against their English officers and killed a number of them ( May 1857)
Where did the Sepoys progress ?
Swiftly the Sepoys took control of many northern cities ; this included a short lived attempt to resurrect the old Mughal Empire.
Who thus joined the Sepoys ?
Those that joined the Sepoys included : discontented landowners, peasants who hated taxation and all those who lost out under British rule
Where were major battles fought ?
Delhi, Cawnpore and Lucknow were the areas where major battles were fought.
What was the massacre at Cawnpore ?
Massacre of 200 British women and children at Cawnpore caused outrage - British public bayed for blood.
Following events at Cawnpore - what happened ?
70,000 fresh troops sent to India armed with the latest Colt reservers.
What happened after British troops arrived ?
British gave swift and brutal revenge.When Muslim mutineers were captured they were sewn into pig skins before they were hung.
Did all regiments join the rebellion ?
Not all regiments joined the rebellion : Gurkhas, Sikhs and Pathan regiments remained loyal to Britain.
When was British rule was reasserted ?
British rule was not entirely reasserted until June 1958 following the battle of Gwalior, south of Delhi.Peace declared on the 8th of July 1858.
Why was the rebellion defeated ?
not all regiments joined the rebellion
some officers remained loyal to Britain
Britain were stronger- more effective resources- 70,000 fresh troops and Colt reservers
Rebellion had no direction.
