Boston Tea Party (1773)
Protest where the Sons of Liberty disguised as Native Americans dumped tea into the Boston Harbor to protest the Tea Act. (Dumped more than a million dollar worth of tea)
Boston Massacre (1770)
British soldiers fired into a crowd of colonists, killing five people.
It was used as propaganda by patriots like Paul Revere.
Battles of Lexington & Concord (April 19, 1775)
First battles of the American Revolution. Known as the “Shot Heard ‘Round the World”. Directed by farmer John Parker.

Why did Great Britain raise taxes in the American colonies?
Britain needed money to pay off its WAR DEBT & to maintain troops in the colonies to protect them.
The colonists were seen as a source of income through taxation.
Why did Parliament pass the Intolerable Acts?
To punish Massachusetts & send a message to the colonies about disobedience after the Boston Tea Party.
What did “No taxation without representation” emphasize?
The colonists believe that they should not be taxed by Parliament since they had no direct representation in it.
What’s a boycott?
Colonists refused to buy British goods as a FORM OF PROTEST against the taxes, which hurt British trade.

Information (often biased) spread to influence public opinion.
The Boston Massacre was used as propaganda to rally colonists against Britain.
What’s an efiggy?
A roughly made model of a specific person. Made in order to be damaged/destroyed as a protest or expression of anger.
What did the fishing fleet ships bring over?
Thousand of tons of salted cod to the Caribbean. Returns with sugar & molasses, raw material for rum. Plays part of the Triangular Trade.
In Africa, what is the currency used to purchase enslaved Africans?
Rum. (Enslaved Africans are the most profitable cargo of them all)
First Continental Congress (1774)
Meeting in Philadelphia to discuss how to respond to the Intolerable Acts. Delegates agreed to boycott British goods and sent a petition to King George lll.
Second Continental Congress (1776)
Convened after fighting began. (Lexington & Concord) Took charge of the war effort and approved the Declaration of Independence.
Thomas Paine’s Common Sense (January 10, 1776)
A pamphlet explaining why colonies should break away from Britain. Used simple language to appeal to common people, greatly influencing public opinion.
