What is the triple alliance and triple entente?
Th triple alliance was formed in 1882 between Austria-Hungary, Germany and Italy.
The triple entente was formed in 1907 between Britain, France and Russia.
What happened in 1914?
28 July: Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia.
1-4 August: Germany declares war on Russia and France and invades Belgium.
Britain declares war on Germany.
Battle of Tannenberg occurred and Germany won and utterly destroyed Russia through the use of smart tactics and strategy.
5-15 September: French and British armies halt the Germans in Belgium and France.
Trench warfare begins in Western Europe.
1st Battle of Mare which prevented the Schlieffen plan, forcing Germany to retreat and the Entente and Allied forces would dig in and fight there for the next 4 years..
What happened in 1915?
25 April: The ANZACs land at Gallipoli. Landed at the wrong cove which resulted in major losses, Turkey Forces were too strong.
December: The Allies withdraw from Gallipoli. This battle was advised by Churchill Winston which nearly ended his political career after their horrible defeat.
What happened in 1916?
March-June: The AIF joins the fight against Germany on the Western Front.
1 July: The British and French launch a big offensive in the Somme Valley on the Western Front. This is called the Battle of Somme.
Battle of Verdun occurred major losses on both sides.
Battle of Jutland first battle between the biggest naval armies (Germany VS Britain).
28 October: The first referendum on conscription is held in Australia.
What happened in 1917?
Battle of Passchendaele -
Both sides wanted control over this village only stopped when Canadian forces stepped in.
Battle of Cambrai -
1st Large scale use of tanks by Britain.
Battle of Caporetta -
Germany and Austria decimated Italian lines but as the Austrians were about to lose the Germans joined in. Together they made a 25 mile advance on October 24th, leading to Italy having to be on the defensive for the rest of the war.
6 April: The USA enters the war.
31 July: The third battle of Ypres (Passchendaele) is launched by the Germans in Belgium.
7 November: Revolution in Russia leads to Russian withdrawal from the war.
20 December: The second conscription referendum is lost in Australia.
What happened in 1918?
21 March: The last German offensive on the Western Front is launched.
18 July: Australian forces lead the first successful large Allied attack in France.
Battle of the German spring offensive on the Western Front.
Biggest crisis for the entente in war causing them to band together and work more effectively against General Erich Ludendorff who wanted to split the entente forces.
11 November: The Armistice is signed, ends the fighting.
What happened in 1919 that officially ended the war?
28 June: The Treaty of Versailles is signed, officially ending the war.
