Dieppe Raid
August 19, 1942
battle between German and Canadian forces on the shore on the Western front to try and claim the port of Dieppe
the Germans are in boats with machine guns
tried to use tanks but the pebble beach stopped them
bad communication –> poorly planned battle with lots of deaths

longest battle of ww2 (1939-45)
fight for control over the seas / allied shipping routes
used convoy system
German “wolfpacks” of U-boats and warships sank allied ships

after pearl harbour, Japan bombed Hong Kong ( a british colony)
inexperienced canadian soldiers fought
hong kong fell and every canadian either died or was taken
slave labour for those who lived
anger from canadian citizens

one of the toughest battles for canadian soldiers
large scale offensive to eliminate Italy that was hard but eventually won
Japanese Internment
Japanese Canadians were forced to leave their lives and were forced to do hard labour
their homes were sold
later they were compensated

a human made famine and genocide in Ukraine
led by stalin
starved the Ukranian population

led by joseph stalin to get rid of everyone who opposed him
Battle of the Scheldt
In 1944 Canadian troops were given the task to clear enemy troops from the Schelt River in Belgium
important river because it gave Canadians access to parts of germany that would be good to give food and ammo through

allies attack to drive the Germans over the Rhine River and out of the Netherlands
Fighting was slow bc of conditions and resistance

maginot line – major set of forts and defenses
the maginot line wasnt in the mountains so the germans entered there
German troops attack the netherlands belgium and luxembourg then take france

germany is overwhlemed by allies – running on fumes
hitler and more nazis kills themselves

Germany split into 4 parts – soviet union in east, allies in west
berlin also divided into 4
nazi leaders are tried for crimes in nuremburg
