AUSTRIA-HUNGARY: completely destroyed.
Four new states carved out of the former Catholic empire (Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia), all secular republics.
BULGARIA: loss of land. Forced to pay huge war reparations.

What happened to each of the losing states after World War I?
Great Depression: definition, causes, effects, and conclusion.
DEFINITION: In October 1929, the U.S. stock market crashed, ushering in a period of ten years characterized by high poverty and unemployment.
CAUSES:
1.) imbalance of food supply/demand (supply less than demand)
2.) risky lending on the part of brokerage firms - kept making risky loans to investors, so banks lost money, banks had to close, people had to lose their deposits
EFFECTS:
From 1929-1933, about 1/3 of all money that had existed in the United State had vanished; worldwide economic crisis
Roosevelt attempted to solve the Great Depression by the “New Deal” - massive government spending on job creation and welfare programs, which shifted the United States toward socialism. This only prolonged the crisis.
CONCLUSION:
World War II (1939) created a new worldwide demand for American-made goods.
Prices went up, and the economy recovered.

HOW DID HITLER GAIN CONTROL OF THEM?
-after release from prision (after writing Mein Kampf), gained control because he was a great public speaker - he was crazy but people liked listening to him (then his book Mein Kampf went wild)
WHAT WERE THE MAIN IDEAS OF NATIISM?
-a socialist ideology in voting total state control of the entire economy (state worship of the German state as if it were God)
-Adolf Hitler was in control; it was kind of the like the anti-Christ; revival of German paganism - (mixture of German and Norse Gods were prohibited)
