Evaluation of the Augustine's Free Will Defence (+ quotes) Flashcards
S - Just punishment
It appears just that those who cause the suffering of others or those who prosper out of others’ suffering will be judged and punished by God, and that those who keep faith are rewarded
S - Bible
The defence is based on the Biblical teachings of Genesis 3 and of Romans (St. Paul’s letter to the Roman’s about Jesus’ crucifixion)
W - Hick
Hick suggested that Augustine’s theodicy implied “infinite punishment for finite sins”, which appears unjust
W - Scheiermacher
Scheiermacher suggested that it is illogical to suggest a perfectly created world has gone wrong, as it would suggest that evil has been created ex nihilo, which is impossible. Either the world was created imperfect or God allowed it to go wrong
