Evaluation Of Bowlbys Maternal Deprivation Flashcards
Replicas that produce different results
Lewis partially replicated the 44 thieves study on a larger scale. She did not find that early prolonged separation from the mother predicted criminality or forming close relationships.
Deprivation and privation are separate
Rutter claimed that when Bowlby discussed deprivation he was in fact muddling two concepts. Rutter drew a distinction between deprivation, which really means loss of primary attachment figure after attachments and privation meaning the failure to form an attachment in the first place.
There are more factors than maternal deprivation
Bowlby often studied children who were orphaned during war. These children were traumatised and lived in poor conditions regardless.
Not all aspects are affected
Levy et al showed that separating a baby from their mother for as little as a day had permanent effects on their social development but no other aspects of social development.
Research support- 44 thieves
Bowlbys 44 thieves study. Showed over half of thieves experienced maternal deprivation. 32% also showed affection less psychopathy.
Research support- Harlow
Harlow took Monkeys from their mother and found when places with other monkeys they behaved differently and these effects lasted and effected them when becoming parents.
Research refuting
Koluchova studied twins that suffered maternal deprivation but all affects were reversed after adoption showing not attaching in critical period doesn’t have permanent effects.
