Evaluating prognosis Flashcards
Kaplan-Meier curves
-used to plot time to event
Right Censored
-observation was terminated before all events could be observed (missed future events)
Left censored
-observations began well after some events have occurred (missed past events)
Log-rank test
- comparison of survival rates of two samples
- non-parametric test
- analyses the difference between the survival curves of two groups
- cannot be used to account or adjust for effects of confounders as it is a univariate test
Cox regression analysis
- multiple variables taken into account
- proportional hazard as it assumes that teh effects of multiple variables are constant over a period of time
- semi-parametric method
Hazard ratio
-gives size of differences between survival curves (log rank test only informs if there is a difference)
Mantel-Haenszel test
-can be used to study the effect of two binary independent variables (e.g male vs female and treatment vs placebo) on the outcome
1 categorical independent variable=
Kaplan-Meier curve with log rank test
> 1 multivariate independent variables (categorical)
Cox’s proportional hazard
2 independent variables (categorical)
Mantel-Haenszel test
