evaluating kant Flashcards
strengths
-categorical imperative is simple and effective as a tool to use our reason to discover moral laws
-in most basic form could even be understood by children (universability)
-says certain acts that can never be morally justifiable unlike Bentham
-removes emotion which mean everyone treated equally
-influential today because of emphasis on human rights and equality, humans have intrinsic value
weaknesses
-kant ignores fact that not all humans capable of intellectual ability to work out universal maxims
-kants theory unrealistic, Hume shows its impossible for humans to ignore their emotions and desires
-no universally agreed moral rules so categorical imperative is wishful thinking
-categorical imperative no more believable that DCT
-too rigid and restrictive, surely if consequence is good then act becomes good
-doesnt make it clear what a person can do
