eutrophication Flashcards
1
Q
what’s eutrophication
A
the process by which natural waters lose oxygen because of an excessive accumulation of organic matter and nutrients
2
Q
what are the 6 stages of eutrophication
A
1) fertilizers (phosphorus) runoff farmers field in rivers
2) downstream in the lake, algae blooms then dies
3) lake bacteria decompose dead algae and consumes large amounts of O2
4) the concentration of O2 decreases
5) fish and other organisms die from the lack of O2
6) dead algae leads to sedimentation
3
Q
what are ways to prevent eutrophication (4)
A
- planting vegetation along rivers to slow erosion and absorb nutrients
- control amount and timing of fertilizer
- aeration (O2)
- use phosphate free detergent in laundry and dish washer
