"Euthenasia is a "false sense of compassion"" Discuss Flashcards
PLAN FOR
- Medical science has its limitations, never sure is someone is in PVS forever.
- The principle used by many QUALYS takes finances into account.
- Sanctity of life is developed from God’s word, the literal embodiment of pure love. euthanasia goes against this
PLAN AGAINST
- Maybe, some never intended for Euthanasia to be based off of compassion.
- Instances of voluntary Euthanasia, people have the right to live according to the law, therefore should have the right to die.
- Fletcher became president of the “Euthanasia society of America”, he is also the author of situation ethics which main principle is agape love. includes personalism and therefore compassion.
PLAN FOR
- Medical science has its limitations, never sure is someone is in PVS forever.
Statistically their is still a 1.6% chance of patients waking up from what was thought to be a PVS after the first year. True compassion would mean that these patients would be given every chance to wake up.
PLAN FOR
- The principle used by many QUALYS takes finances into account.
Quality Adjusted Life Years takes into consideration the cost compared to how much longer someones life is extended. It is in no way compassionate to compare someoned life to a money standard.
PLAN FOR
- Sanctity of life is developed from God’s word, the literal embodiment of pure love. euthanasia goes against this
“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them.” - Genesis 1:17
Furthermore – Imago Dei means that euthanising someone is destroying the image of God, therefore ridding the world of a representation of Gods love
PLAN AGAINST
- Maybe, some never intended for Euthanasia to be based off of compassion.
QUALYS is a way of assessing whether it is financially worth performing surgery on a patient, not about whether it allows more love to be exchanged.. Nat Hentoff - has assessed the cost benefit of legalizing euthanasia on a wider scale.
PLAN AGAINST
- Instances of voluntary Euthanasia, people have the right to live according to the law, therefore should have the right to die.
As seen in the case of Diane Pretty who was paralysed from the neck down, took her case to court with the belief that she had the right to self determination. John Stuart Mill would be in agreeance with this as he believed that only she truly knew what was best for her as she was the only one who knew her true experience.
PLAN AGAINST
- Fletcher became president of the “Euthanasia society of America”, he is also the author of situation ethics which main principle is agape love. includes personalism and therefore compassion.
Fletcher believed that the sanctity of life principle was not absolute as all commands including “do not kill” can be broken when loves calls for someone to do so. “loves decisions are made situationally not prescriptively” implies that euthanising someone can still be the most loving thing to do
