Claire foster views
Against euthanasia
Priority should be saving life but legalising euthanasia stops this
Love your neighbour doesn’t mean killing them
Puts pressure on old people who think their a burden
Euthanasia shouldn’t become the norm Palliative care is effective
Her view would align with natural law
Paul Badham views opposing Claire Foster
Christians are inconsistent as they think assisted dying is wrong as only God decides who dies - but they have no problem with resuscitating someone after they die and doing everything possible to keep them alive
“Treat others who you wanna be treated” - 80% want assisted suicide as an option
Legalising Euthanasia won’t make it the norm - in Oregon only 1/25 requested euthanasia’s actually go through
Wants people to fight till the end whilst eliminating the fear of unbearable and unsolvable suffering
His view would align with situation ethics
Sanctity of life argument
All life precious as it’s God given
Humans made in Gods image
Wrong to take life regardless of meaningfulness to us (also it could have meaning to God that we don’t see)
Bible evidence - “you shall not murder”
“God created humankind in his own image”
Explain autonomy
Belief we are free and able to make our own decisions
Laws and governments should be able to control how we can and can’t act when involving how our actions effect others, they should be able to when involving how we want to effect ourselves
If we want to kill ourselves we should be allowed
In alignment with Singers preference utilitarianism in which we can pursue our own interests as long as we don’t harm anyone
Argument against euthanasia based on constantly improving medical technology
Constantly improving medical technology means some people who take assisted suicide may have survived if they’d waited a few more years showing we aren’t aware of God’s plans so shouldn’t intervene in matters of life or death. O
