Euthanasia and assisted dying Flashcards
Voluntary Euthanasia
A patient gives explicit consent and requests euthanasia
Non-voluntary
Euthanasia when a patient is unable to consent, ex. a young child or someone in a long term coma
Active
Something is done to cause the patients death, ex. a lethal injection
Passive
Withholding what is needed to keep the patient alive, ex. turning off patients life support or not giving life saving medication
Assisted dying
A patient asks for help to end their life, though the last action must be the patients own, for ex. a doctor may provide lethal medication but the patient must drink it themselves
Euthanasia
A greek word that literally means ‘good death.’ The term is usually used to refer to the painless ending of another person’s life, often someone who is terminally ill, to prevent further pain/suffering.
