What is voluntary euthanasia?
When a patient makes the request to die
What is involuntary euthanasia?
When a patient doesn’t or can’t make a request to be killed but there is a strong belief that it is what they would want
What is active euthanasia?
When death us bought about by an active agent such as an injection
What is passive euthanasia?
When death is bought about by the removal of a treatment
What is assisted suicide?
A patient is given the means to end their own lives
What are the laws on euthanasia and assisted suicide in the majority of countries?
It is outlawed
What are the three European states which allow euthanasia?
Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg

Switzerland
What are the moral arguments for euthanasia?
- if a person is suffering they may judge that life is not worth living
- many people have long drawn out deaths which are not dignified
- it is very expensive to treat terminally ill patients and that money should be spent of those which a greater chance of survival
- it is the right of everyone to choose the manner and time of their death
What a re the arguments against euthanasia?
- a doctors diagnosis can be wrong or a cure may be found
- people could distrust their doctors if they are advising people to die
- patients may not be in the right state of mind to know what they are asking for
- people could feel pressurised into asking for it
What is the catholic teachings about euthanasia?
- it is wrong because it goes against the sanctity of life
- the CCC says that life belongs to God not to us
- if death is imminent withholding treatment or providing pain relief that could quicken death is acceptable
What is the evangelical Christian view on euthanasia?
- it is wrong
- everything should be done to extend life
- allowing someone to die is murdering them
What is the liberal Christian view on euthanasia?
- doctors should act in accordance with the patients wishes
- sometimes it can be the most compassionate thing to do
- God has given us free will so we should be allowed to choose
