Define Euthanasia
The intentional ending of a life usually with the intention of ending suffering
What are the 5 forms of Euthanasia
Voluntary, Non-Voluntary, Involuntary, Active, Passive
Define Voluntary Euthanasia
A person directly and deliberately causes someone’s death. E.g. giving an overdose of pain-killers or a lethal injection.
Define Non-Voluntary Euthanasia
A person who wants to live, but someone else e.g. a doctor or family member, decides that it would be in the persons best interest if their life was ended.
Define Involuntary Euthanasia
A person does not directly take someone’s life they just allow them to die E.g. withdrawing/withholding treatment/food/water.
Define Active Euthanasia
Euthanasia is carried out by the person who dies
Define Passive Euthanasia
The person is unconscious or otherwise unable to make a meaningful choice between living and dying. Therefore, someone makes the decision on their behalf.
Define Living Will
A written statement detailing a person’s desires regarding future medical treatment in circumstances in which they are no longer able to express informed consent, especially an advance directive.
