4 shengen area, Eu citizens can travel freely throughout most of the continent without a passport
5 economic engine- single market and customs union - enables goods, services, money and people to move freely
6 the euro with the eurozone - the single currency is practical, we have monetary union through coordinated economic and fiscal policies and a common monetary policy
7 international trade bloc and the EU represents an important political and economic bloc comparable to the US and china
Challenges facing the EU
1 eurosceptic- member states have lost too much of their sovereignty in the integration process
2 losing economic independence- you have to adjust monetary and fiscal policies
3 migration from poorer to richer EU countries- putting pressure on job markets by increasing unemployment, lowering wage rates, putting pressure on public services such as healthcare, schools
4 democratic deficit- decision-making of 27 Member States is a slow and complex process, ordinary citizens feel like they have too little to say in the decision-making processes and that it isnt transparent
5 brexit- uk was big political and military power forthe EU, net contributor
6 demographic changes- people are aging, fewer babies are born
7 climate change
