What was the historical reason behind the formation of EU?

A

Post WWII many EU countries struggling. A lot of socialist ideas getting into the countries due to the post war hunger! EU countries united to do some trade liberalization and help eachother!

A

Custums Union (Abolished Tarrifs and quotas in the trade of goods between members + common foreign trade policy with non-members). Single Market.

A

The goal was to maintain fiscal and monetary stabillity/discipline within countries about to join the Eurozone! (Monetary Union)

Included the Stabillity and Growth Pact and Excessive Deficit Procedure: (Proprosed by Germany).

  1. Gov Deficit could not be > 3% of GDP
  2. Gov Debt/GDP should not be > 60%
  3. Countries should anually present stabillity programs to the Comissions and Council of the EU
  4. Countries that breach it could be sanctioned!
