Why did Europeans want to explore?
God, glory and gold
Explain the reason of god.
Europeans, especially catholics wanted to stop the spread of islam and convert non christians to christianity.
Explain the reason of gold
A desire for new resources of wealth was the main reason for European exploration. Merchants began looking for quick, direct trade routes to Asia to avoid Muslim and Italian merchants, and to increase profit. Crusades and renaissance stimulated European wants for Asian luxury good.
Explain the reason for glory
Kings who sponsored voyages of exploration gained overseas colonies, new sources of wealth for their nation, and increased power.
Exploration presented Europeans the opportunity to rise from poverty, gain fame fortune and status.

He was an italian explorer, he believed the world was round and planned to travel to china and india by sailing west instead of east from spain. But, he had to find someone to fund the expedition and could not raise money in Italy. He looked to another Catholic Christian country to help him (spain)

Isabella of spain, she agreed to finance the exploration.
Why did he call his first settlement Hispaniola?
Hispaniola means Spanish Islands, he wanted to claim this land as his and the Spanish.
