French for rebirth. A time of cultural revival in Europe from the 1300s to the 1500s.
Humanism
A cultural movement of the Renaissance based on the study of classical works.
Reformation
A religious movement that began in in the 1500s in an effort to reform the Catholic Church that resulted in the creation of new Protestant churches.
Counter-Reformation
A movement to strengthen the teachings and structure of the Catholic Church.
Absolute monarchy
Monarchy-or government with rulers who inherit their position from birth-in which rulers have absolute and unlimited power.
Prestige
Having high status in other’s eyes.
Doctrine
Article or principle of faith.
Enlightenment
A period during the 1600s and 1700s when scholars studied culture and society by applying reason and natural laws.
French Revolution
A political revolution that removed the king from power and formed a republic.
Industrial Revolution
The application of machine power to manufacturing in the 1800s and the resulting transformation of societies.
Nationalism
The belief that all people of a nation are a distinct group, regardless of race or ethnicity.
Imperialism
The process of creating an empire by taking over other areas.
Radical
Someone with extreme views.
Access
The ability to go somewhere or obtain something.
Hyper-inflation
An extremely rapid and sharp increase in prices.
