Endosymbiont Hypothesis
Eukaryotic cells were the result of prokaryotic cells coming together
Where are prokaryotic cells found?
Archaea and bacteria
What do eukaryotic cells make up?
The bodies of animals, plants, fungi, and protists
Organelle
Distinct structure that is designed to carry out specialized task(s) for the cell
Nucleus
Contains the cell’s chromosomes. It’s genes control the growth and activities of the cell
Mitochondrion
Almost every eukaryotic cell has at least 1.
Site of cellular respiration. (Uses oxygen time break down food, molecules, ATP, etc.)
Cell membrane
Outer layer of cell. Controls what enters and exists a cell.
Chloroplast
Only found in organisms that do photosynthesis. Uses light energy to make glucose (sugar). Basis of most food chains.
Ribosome
Small organelle, each eukaryotic cell has many. Proteins are made at these.
Protista
Refers to all species of single cell eukaryotes.
Kingdom Plantae, Animalia, and Fungi
Multi-cellular eukaryotes
Protist 3 main groups
Slime molds
Phytoplankton
Protozoa/zooplankton
Slime molds
Fungus-like protists
Like true fungi, can use spores to reproduce
