Eukaryotic Cells Flashcards
Which organisms are eukaryotes?
Animals, plants and fungi.
Name the 8 organelles present in all eukaryotic cells:
- Cell surface membrane
- Nucleus
- Mitochondria
- Lysosomes
- Ribosomes
- Rough endoplasmic reticulum
- Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
- Golgi apparatus
What is the function of the cell surface membrane? (2)
- Controls the passage of entry of substances into the cell.
- Site of cell communication via receptors.
What is the function of the nucleus? (2)
- Stores DNA.
- Nuclear pores allow mRNA and ribosomes to pass through.
What is the function of mitochondria?
Carry out aerobic respiration to produce ATP.
What is the function of lysosomes?
Contain digestive enzymes to break down pathogens, old organelles, cells and food molecules.
What is the function of ribosomes?
The site of protein synthesis.
What is the function of the RER?
Provide a large surface area for protein synthesis.
What is the function of the SER?
Synthesise, store and transport lipids and carbohydrates.
What is the function of the golgi apparatus? (2)
- Modifies proteins
- Sort, package and transport molecules around the cell.
What are 3 additional organelles found in plants, algae and fungi?
Chloroplasts, cell vacuole and cell wall.
What is the function of chloroplasts?
Site of photosynthesis.
Which organisms are chloroplasts present in?
Plants and algae
What is the function of a cell vacuole? (2)
- Maintains cell structure.
- Acts as a temporary energy store.
Which organism is a cell vacuole present in?
Plants
