Eukaryotic Cell Flashcards
Organelles
Small structures that perform specific metabolic function of the cell. ‘Little organs’
Mitochondria
Site of ATP synthesis; powerhouse of the cell.
Ribosomes
RNA+PROTEIN; site of protein synthesis. Found on rough ER and free throughout cell.
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
Sugars attach to proteins within cisterns, where proteins are bound in vesicles for transport to Golgi apparatus/other sites Membranous system studded w/ ribosomes.
Smooth Endoplasmic reticulum
Site of lipid and steroid (cholesterol) synthesis, lipid metabolism, drug detoxification.
Golgi apparatus
Packages, modifies, and separates proteins for secretion from the cell. Stack of flattened membranes.
Peroxisomes
Membranous sacs contain CATALASE + OXIDASE detoxify toxic substances. Catalase breaks down hydrogen.
Lysosomes
Membranous sacs containing acid HYDROLASE. intercellular digestion
Microtubules
Support the cell and give it shape. Cell movement.
Intermediate filaments
Protein fibers.
Microfilaments
Help form cells cytoskeleton. Protein actin. Intercellular movement.
Flagellum
Like cilli but longer, tail-like extension, propels the cell.
Microvilli
Tubular tensions of the plasma membrane, contain actin filaments. Increase surface area for absorption.
Nucleus
Control center of the cell; transmits genetic information and provides instruction for protein synthesis. Largest organelle.
Nuclear envelope
Double membrane structure; regulates passage of substances to and from the nucleus.
