GI
Geographic Indication -
Legally defined vineyard area.
Cover a whole region or country or even just one vineyard.
GIs outside the EU
Indicate where they were grown. Winemakers free to grow any grape they think will succeed.
Means various styles of wine are found.
GIs within the EU
Indicates where they were grown
AND
extra regulation on what grapes grow where & process for how a wine is made
= reliable indicator of quality for consumer
GIs in the EU’s 2 groups
PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) -
small areas with tight regulation (EUs most prestigious wines are here)
PGIs (Protected Geographic Indication) - covers wider areas, less strict regs.
Varied styles from inexpensive high vol to low vol outstanding wines.
